Glad to see that the protective ‘Preview’ formula didn’t keep you from ripping into Caveman for being the maddening experiment that it is. I think that it’s true: even without considering its premise (The Geico commercials are not unfunny, really), it is clear that the show is being designed as something so borderline offensive that I don’t really know how it got greenlit in the first place. Does ABC seriously think that their audiences, which watched how many seasons out of squeaky clean According to Jim, George Lopez and My Wife and Kids, is going to be able to get the satire enough not to be offended?

While I concur with Brill on Sam I Am’s likely success, I’d attribute it more to its combination of Christina Applegate and airing following Dancing with the Stars during the fall season. That said, whether it pulls the same trick as the Tim Meadows vehicle “Help Me Help You” and bombs as soon as it loses its lead-in remains to be seen.

I really need to see this Pushing Daisies pilot. Considering its apparent quality, I almost wonder if ABC should consider beginning a viral campaign to build hype for the show by streaming the pilot online once it becomes “for review”. If it is really as stunning as you and pretty well everyone else under the sun claims, you’d think that ABC would run the risk of turning it loose. Just a thought.

Hey, Myles. Thanks for the comment—and for listening. I agree that the potential problem for Pushing Daisies is connecting with its potential audience and that ABC might want to employ some viral or other nontraditional marketing. I’m hoping that word of mouth and the early critical buzz will help but ABC needs to really take this to the Net, run trailers in movie theaters, whatever, and give people ample opportunities to hear about the show and see the pilot. Unfortunately, this is such an oddball that unless it has some champions at the network it could fall through the cracks.

I think that ABC has left the show out the dry, amongst its pilots anyways. Private Practice sells itself, Big Shots has the post-Grey’s slot, the newly renamed Samantha Be Good (Which is…a take on Johnny Be Bad? I guess? I don’t even know, they need to get this show a decent title soon) has post-Dancing…and Pushing Daisies has a tough Wednesday timeslot with no lead-in, and no help whatsoever.

But who knows: perhaps that lack of a lead-in and other factors will force ABC to put some marketing muscle behind the show to attempt to bolster its attempt at invading Wednesday as they did Thursday last season. Hopefully they realize that if they were able to make Ugly Betty into a hit in a tough timeslot, perhaps Pushing Daisies might be able to do the same.

(I am aware that comparing the two shows is probably not apt, but timeslot wise I figure that’s what ABC is hoping for).

Well, although there are many shows which I have thought would get canned during their first season but didn’t, I have a hard time seeing “Cavemen” connect and resonate with an audience. Any audience. hat said, I have yet to watch the new premiere episode so maybe they made such vast improvements that the show’s much better than the original pilot.
