Brill and Eric Watch TV 212

Doctor WhoIt’s a British Science Fiction Invasion as we review the third season premiere of “Doctor Who” (photo, left) and two new shows: the much-anticipated spinoff “Torchwood,” and a superb modernization of a classic Robert Louis Stevenson tale, “Jekyll.”

CBS’ plans for vampire drama “Moonlight” are illuminated as the show undergoes massive age-based recasting and character reworking. Not wanting to be left out, little sister network The CW recasts a couple of key roles on “Reaper” and “Life Is Wild.” Meanwhile, what do “According to Jim,” Isaiah Washington and the American version of “Footballers Wives” (called “Football Wives”) have in common? They’re all in line for that oh-so-rare Hollywood second chance.

Finally, we bestow our first official Shout Out and go to a “Clean House” garage sale in our neighborhood. Unfortunately, we aren’t in the market for a rusted-out VW Beetle or a $300 sewing machine cabinet.

Thanks for the heads-up on the new BBC America shows. Unless it involves Trinny and Susannah or Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen, we typically don’t watch BBC-A at our house, so without this ep I might not have heard about Jekyll and Torchwood.

My wife will be slightly envious that you got to go to a Clean House garage sale. She’s a big Niecy Nash fan. Being a fan of the show, however, doesn’t seem to be helping OUR house get any less cluttered. Hmmm….

Enough rambling. Thanks for watching bad TV so I don’t have to!

FYI, the reason the “2-hour premiere” of “Jekyll” on BBC America seemed like 2 episodes is because it is, in fact, 2 separate episodes, just aired back-to-back.

Thanks for the feedback, guys. We didn’t really watch much BBC America until Coupling was on, then we gradually got converted to some other shows. I was never a Doctor Who fan until the current series—not that I plan on going back and watching all the “classic” ones. I also liked the BBC Robin Hood series; Brill not so much.

Jeckyll isn’t strict sci-fi the way Who and Torchwood are; I think it has much broader appeal. There are no cheesy special effects to get in the way of the very good writing and acting.

Another BBC sci-fi show to watch out for is Hyperdrive, a comedy starring Nick Parks (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz) as a somewhat slovenly, incompetent version of Captain Kirk. Very funny stuff. Second season should be starting in the fall.

And, yeah, bummed that I missed Niecy. Maybe next time.

Three things:

1. Is it a coincidence that “Dr. Brill” rhymes with “Dr. Phil”? Me think not.

2. George Clooney’s pig is dead: http://www.zap2it.com/movies/news/zap-georgeclooneypetpigdies,0,2931304.story

3. I only had two things to say.

‘Tis all.

1. Eric’s office is directly across the street from Dr. Phil’s studio. Thus, his confusing the two of us is understandable, while the rhyming is just plain fun.

2. Yeah, I remembered that the pig was dead about halfway through talking about him last night, but I didn’t want to break Eric’s anti-swine flow by bringing it up. Still, George Clooney was a proud pig owner for many a year.

Brill and I have a revised take on “Torchwood” after seeing more episodes. Check it out:
