Brill and Eric Watch TV 216: Press Tour Dispatch
Polishing off the cable portion of the 2007 Summer Press Tour, we dive into the “High School Musical” phenomenon, Showtime’s new comedy “Californication” (with David Duchovny) and the returning series “Dexter” and “Weeds.”
Zap2it scribes Daniel Fienberg and Rick Porter join us again to ponder some of the mysteries of this year’s panels: if “Dexter’s” Michael C. Hall is identifying with his serial killer character a little too much; if new “Weeds” cast member Matthew Modine and a young costar partook before their session; whether “Californication” star Duchovny was serious about a forthcoming “X-Files” movie; and, finally, Star Jones’ caginess regarding her dramatic weight loss.
We review what may turn out to be our favorite series of the summer, AMC’s “Mad Men” (premiering Thursday, July 19), about early 1960s American society against the backdrop of a New York ad agency (photo, left). Finally, we consider the implications of a BET lunch accompanied by a gospel choir, Chuck D and the Reverend Al Sharpton.

A tv “hero” having sex with an underage was shown on “Queer As Folk”, at the very least.

I like your podcast but what I don’t understand is why you even went to the BET luncheon. You obviously had NO interest in any of their shows. If you went for the free lunch, then you didn’t need to even mention it. Especially since all you did was slam it.

Yanit, I don’t think we were slamming the BET lunch as much as commenting on what happened there and it’s certainly not the case that we had no interest in their shows. As I said in the podcast, I am a big fan of Public Enemy from back in their heyday so was excited about Chuck D. Dan, Rick and I went on for some time about Hip Hop vs. America but it was really a discussion that didn’t belong on the podcast.
But you bring up some important points, so we’re going to address them in our next podcast!
