Brill and Eric Watch TV 220: Press Tour Dispatch

Taylor Momsen of Gossip GirlWe have the scoop on “Aliens in America,” “Gossip Girl,” “America’s Next Top Model,” “Smallville,” “Supernatural,” “Beauty and the Geek” and more.

It’s The CW’s turn at press tour and the members of the press are getting surly. “Aliens in America” is criticized for its portrayal of Midwesterners as bigots, while teen behaviors on “Gossip Girl” are called into question. Brill’s more concerned about the latter’s deviations from the source material, which she discusses with producer Josh Schwartz. In particular, the two chat about the “ick” factor of burdening a 13-year-old actress Taylor Momsen (photo, left) with her literary counterpart’s noteworthy breasts. Given her attire at the CW’s party, though, we’re convinced she doesn’t need the cleavage to get the kind of attention the book’s character receives.

Plus, we take a small break from our exhaustive press tour to respond to listener email and comments about ABC’s “Pushing Daisies,” our segment on the BET network luncheon, and taking Eric to task for confusing his Oscars.

Having now seen the Pushing Daisies pilot, I stand strongly in my opinion that they must make this thing public. My fellow Canadian Kelly is right: the commercials can’t possibly encapsulate this series. I thought I had read all of the buzz about the series to the point where I understood the entire concept, but the pilot still surprised me.

Even if they put up the prologue, there would at least be a better understanding of the way the series works. This is a series that people really need to see to understand and, as a result, be able to force other people to watch it. They need to start fostering a cult following, these things just don’t pop up overnight. If they did, Fuller might still be working on Wonderfalls.

The pilot’s “out there” now, so ABC should cut their losses and stream the pilot. ASAP.

Hey Myles –

ABC is currently doing public showings of “Pushing Daisies” across the United States as part of its Red Carpet Screening Tour to help get the buzz going before September. They are also presenting down at Comic-Con in San Diego this weekend. As for Press Tour, the show’s panel is tomorrow morning (7/25) and the the show is on most of the critics we’ve spoken to’s “Best of” lists for the fall. I expect ABC is aware they are on to something special and making it available online may not happen so soon, but is definitely part of their strategy for the show. We’ll have even more on it on Friday when we do our ABC podcast.
