Brill and Eric Watch TV 224
This week we stoke up Showtime’s “Weeds” and the new David Duchovny comedy, “Californication” (photo, left).
The third season of “Weeds” picks up where the last left off, with suburban mom pot dealer Nancy facing the unpleasant realities of her trade. Things get worse for her — and everyone else — from there, but we think it’s a good move forward.
Duchovny returns to series television, bringing with him all the self-effacing bounder charm we love to his Hank Moody character, a New York writer whose Los Angeles dreams have gone sour. Sure, we’ve seen it before, but self-destruction and meager redemptions haven’t been this funny in a good long while.
In news, we address the rumor that Kristen Bell is slated to get “Lost,” discuss whether or not there’s such a thing as too many vampires at one network (in this case, HBO) and make an obligatory mention that the new “Bachelor” hails from the Lone Star State.
Correction: Justin Kirk did not play Mary-Louise Parker’s husband in “Angels in America.” Patrick Wilson did. Kirk played — and was nominated for an Emmy for — Prior Walter/Leatherman in the Park. The fact that she thinks “Angels” is dated and overrated does not excuse or explain Brill’s error. Either way, she regrets making it.
