We review “Battlestar Galactica: Razor,” and the season finale of “Weeds,” plus more discussion of the WGA strike and its fallout.
As the WGA strike enters its third week, the studios start playing hardball. NBC Universal stuck it to the actors this week by invoking force majeure and putting cast members of such shows as “The Office,” “30 Rock” and “Bionic Woman” on half pay for the next five weeks.
Sci Fi Channel offers up a holiday treat in the form of “Battlestar Galactica: Razor” (starring Stephanie Jacobsen, photo, right), a two-hour event that not only tells the tale of the Battlestar Pegasus before it met up with Galactica, but portends much darkness for the show’s upcoming final season. Bring it!
Finally, “Weeds” polishes off its third season by setting up its fourth. Will it be a new beginning for the Botwin family or more of the same?

Pfft, term paper? I’m writing a thesis on Battlestar. (Seriously: I’m writing a chapter exclusively on the show based on its connection to generic romance and medieval heroism).
I would tend to disagree that Razor isn’t deep philosophically: I’ve been watching the 2nd season recently (Specifically the pre- and post-Pegasus sections), and I think that Razor does a lot to flesh out and emphasize some of the themes present within these episodes. It might not serve as a standalone elaborate statement to this effect (Without going into spoilers, that is clearly not its intention), but it does integrate into the canon unexpectedly well.

Hey Myles. Our point was more that “Razor” doesn’t break any new ground with its philosophies (either for the show or television at large). It’s definitely deeper and more profound than 99% of what else is on TV.
Even though I love “Battlestar,” there’s part of me that forgets how good it is during hiatus. Which is kind of cool because it’s nice to continue being surprised by an old favorite.

I watched Razor this morning and it was pretty good. It is good to see them begin to answer some of the questions of the Cylons “evolution” and I really liked Shaw’s progression.
Watching the show got me thinking on how it could possibly end without being a disappointment. They have already said that the human race WILL get to Earth by the end of this season. You know this show has to have some sort of twist to it instead of just a happy ending kind of thing so what can they do that won’t “jump the shark”? Showing up in Earth’s past? Showing up to an deserted Earth (pre or post man-kind)?
Or maybe everyone is killed off by the Cylons and they set up shop here and we are all Cylons?

It’s always heard to end a series well, especially one like BSG which has been all about the ending from the start.
Anything would be better than how the original series ended—with the ridiculously bad “Galactica 1980.” Sci-Fi occasionally airs it and it’s worth seeing for just how bad something like this can get. It’s like Battlestar meets Knight Rider. The scene I most distinctly remember is a Cylon being fried by a microwave oven at a Halloween party.

Weeds… No HBO, so no comment. Writers… when I was working at a company when the union went out on strike, those of us in middle-management not in the union were out of work, laid off until the strike was resolved. I would have given an important body part for half-pay! I think the writers should get a slice of the pie, just like the others who get theirs already. It’s only fair. On Battlestar, all I can say is WOW! I wondered how it was Pegasus got away and now I know. Primo special effects! I wonder if these are the same folks who did Babylon 5. I was not exactly a fan of the original series though I did watch once in a while, enough to keep up on the storylines and I agree, the original series ended badly. I, for one, am glad they are filling in some of the holes I wondered about in the past. I really hate it when a series abruptly ends with loose ends dangling all over the place…

I hope that you are better with your cold, Eric, and that you both had a nice Thanksgiving. I have a question: are there plans for a second season of TELL ME YOU LOVE ME?

Hey, Giada—
That’s a big yes on “Tell Me You Love Me.” From what we know now, they’re sticking with the same couples. We should have more info and details when HBO has their session at Winter Press Tour in January.

I’m happy to know that. Thank you!
